Grimsby’s Christmas pantomime has officially been launched with Jack And The Beanstalk set to captivate audiences this coming festive season.
Running throughout December at Grimsby Auditorium, there will be a number of famous faces gracing the stage to entertain people of all ages over the festive period. With a number of shows already sold out, it’s sure to be a hit.
Martin Daniels, son of the late magician Paul Daniels, will be playing Martin McSmuttermutter while Sue Hodge of ‘Allo ‘Allo fame will star as Fairy Mimi Le Bonk in the production. Also in the cast is Alice Murray, from Louth, who is excited to be part of a show in the area.
She said: “It’s really nice to be doing something in the local area and I’m glad to be a part of the production. I think people tend to think there isn’t a lot going on in the theatres, but there is quite the buzz at the minute.”
In her career, Alice has done a lot of children’s theatre shows, but this will be her first professional panto. “I’m looking forward to this and hope to dip my toe into TV and film in the coming years,” she added.
By her side will be Peter Lyall who is playing Jack the Lad. He said: “I love this production as it’s a classic panto and it’s full of great people.” Having not been to Grimsby before, he came recently to see what the town was like.
“Me and my mum came to have a look and I think it’s lovely,” Peter said. “We also ended up taking the dog for a walk in Cleethorpes.” However, someone who is no stranger to Grimsby is Ian Norton, who will be celebrating a decade of pantos in the town this year.
Ian said: “It’s great to have been here ten years and I love coming back here. The audience always seem pleased to see me which is nice too.” After leaving drama school, Ian played a number of roles before ending up as a pantomime dame.
“I muddled through a couple, but then I started to really enjoy being the dame and I’ve been doing it ever since.” He added: “I love coming to Grimsby, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing to 100 people or 2,000, you get an amazing reaction.
“The people here are the best for having a laugh and give it everything when they’re watching and I’ve never had that anywhere else.”
Also returning is Martin Daniels, who will be playing Martin McSmuttermutter. He said: “It’s great to be back, I absolutely love panto.”
For him, the best part is seeing the audience’s reaction. “I love seeing parents and children smiling and laughing at what we do on stage,” Martin said. “However, this isn’t just a mess around, it takes skill and hard work to be in pantomime.” Echoing that was Sue Hodge who has only been in Grimsby once before.
“I came for a Deep Purple concert years ago, but haven’t been back since,” she said. “This is my first time on stage and I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time here.”
