Proposed lease of Quibell Park to Scunthorpe United for training facility

Scunthorpe United appear poised to rent land from North Lincolnshire Council for a new football training facility.

A council decision record published in late July, but decided on in June, approves a proposed lease of Quibell Park off Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe. This would be to “facilitate the use as, and further the development of, a football training centre for Scunthorpe United Football Club”.

Quibell Park hosts a range of athletics facilities, including a running track, as well as a velodrome. The alternative outcome of not granting the lease is presented in the decision record as affecting the sustainability of the football club.

“This will not enable the development of a football training centre as detailed above. This will affect the sustainability of Scunthorpe United Football Club. The site would be retained by the council along with all associated liabilities, responsibilities and costs.”

The lease is to The New Show Ground Community Interest Company (CIC). This is the same not-for-profit that bought Glanford Park last year, the 9,000 seater Attis Arena home of the Iron, and surrounding land.

Scunthorpe barrister Tahina Akther created the CIC which bought Glanford Park for a reported £3m from former owner, Peter Swann. Council-awarded Towns Fund cash was used to fund the purchase.

A recent North Lincolnshire Council cabinet document confirms plans for housing at part of the Glanford Park site. The document covers schemes supported by government investment. Under ‘Transforming Scunthorpe’s Housing Market’, which has an estimated completion date of by March 2027, it states: “Land purchased at Scunthorpe United Football Club to deliver a mixed-use development of residential and commercial.”

The New Show Ground CIC has among its current seven directors the council leader Cllr Rob Waltham and a senior council officer. Laura Matić, from North Lincs Structures Ltd is its chair. Ms Akther ceased being a director herself at the end of May.

The decision record on the Quibell Park lease is extremely brief in nature and does not state the length of the lease, nor the cost of it, nor whether the lease will impact existing sports clubs that use the Quibell Park facilities. North Lincolnshire Council and Scunthorpe United have been reached out to for comment.
