Rainham Steel’s £3.5m rebar production facility by the River Trent approved

Up to 60 skilled jobs could be created over the next two years at a new steel production facility on the west side of the River Trent in North Lincolnshire.

Rainham Steel were successfully granted planning permission by North Lincolnshire Council for a rebar production facility at Althorpe Wharf. It is understood the facility’s development would amount to more than £3m investment by the company.

RMS Trent Ports Limited previously used the site for the storage of materials, including steel, timber and bulk wood pellets. The application states the site currently employs 15 people, but the new light industrial activities are anticipated to create up to 60 new jobs in two years.

The planning application indicated the site’s hours of operation will remain the same, 6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. “Present buildings on the property provide approximately 9,500 m2 of secure light industrial space,” an application document details. The buildings are generally in poor condition due at least partly to the storage previously of corrosive materials.

Light industrial machines will be installed for the process of reinforcement bar. Also known as rebar, it is a steel bar used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures. Existing site buildings will be reused, with minor changes to their external appearance. Several fire escape exit doors will be installed – the application acknowledges the buildings have “very limited fire escapes” currently.

Francis Micallef, Rainham Steel’s operations director, told North Lincolnshire Matters it was a “really exciting announcement” and 20 jobs will be initially created.
