School reunion organised to bring Lindsey’s ‘Class of 1985’ back together after 40 years

A former Lindsey School pupil with “fond memories” of her time there has organised a special school reunion for those who left 40 years ago this year.

The ‘Class of 1985’ reunion will take place at Wilton Fields on Wilton Road in Humberston from 7pm on Saturday, May 24, with tickets costing £10 each (plus £1.55 booking fee). All proceeds will go directly to St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby.

Pupils from the Class of 1985 at the former Lindsey School in Cleethorpes – as well as those from the year above who left in 1984 – and former teachers and families of pupils who are no longer with us are all welcome to attend the special event.

Speaking to Grimsby Live, organiser Jill Cuthbertson Gilby said: “In 2010 I organised a school reunion to commemorate 25 years since we left and 150 people came. It was the first reunion there’d been since we left school and it was amazing to see everybody again. The event was phenomenal.

“It brought a lot of people back together and reunited people, and we even had a wedding come out of it, which was amazing. Two childhood sweethearts reconnected and ended up getting married, so it was meant to be.”

Following the success of the first event, Jill decided to organise another.

“I bumped into a few old school friends and they asked me when I’m doing another school reunion, and they managed to talk me into it,” Jill said.

“I said, ‘OK, I’ll do another one’, but it’s been such hard work because the effort involved in trying to get everyone together is quite immense. But at least we have social media now, which is brilliant – in 2010 I had to find people on Friends Reunited, so that’s how far we’ve come.”

Speaking about their school days, Jill reminisced: “It was a good time and it was a good school. We went on trips to France and Germany and I was in a lot of the school teams so I knew a lot of people. Socially, life was really good.

Jill described her time at The Lindsey School as ‘good days’

“As you get older you can look back more fondly on school days as you do at the time. I think there was a lot less pressure at school then as there is now with social media and things like that – they were much more innocent days back then. It would be lovely to get everyone back together.”

50 people have already secured tickets for the event, with around 100 still available to former pupils who left in 1984 and 1985 and their partners, former teachers and families of former pupils who have since passed away.

“We lost another of our classmates last year to illness, we’ve lost quite a few of them now, so I’m planning some sort of memorial for them and a projector show of all our pictures to remember those we’ve lost along the way,” Jill said.

“We’d be really happy to have their families there and share our memories.”
