Barclays has opened new banking facilities in Scunthorpe and Grimsby after bank branch closures last month.
The bank has opened two Barclays Local facilities, where visitors can talk face-to-face with staff from a bank. In both cases, council-owned buildings have been used to host the hubs, as the branches closed on the grounds of declining footfall.
The pop-up banking sites help maintain a physical link for customers in place of the closures. Help and advice is available at the sites on a wide range of issues, including digital banking, money management, bereavement assistance, frauds and scams, payments and transfers.

The Barclays Local in Scunthorpe recently opened and is located in the Central Library. Barclays Local in Grimsby opened on Tuesday, March 5, at the Town Hall, a Barclays spokesperson confirmed.
The Scunthorpe Barclays Local is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3.30pm, with closure between 12.30pm and 1pm. Its current hours are slightly longer, half-an-hour extra a day, than the bank’s branch was open for before its closure.
North Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Rob Waltham said: “The council is on the side of our community and we stepped up to offer these facilities for free to help local residents get face-to-face access to banking. The new Barclays Local is a great addition to all the help, advice and activities that are available at Scunthorpe Central.
“Talking to someone face-to-face is vital for many people, especially older people who may have complex issues to deal with and are not as digitally savvy. I have visited the hub and was impressed with the friendly and helpful member of the Barclays team.”
The Grimsby Town Hall-hosted Barclays Local is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 12.30pm, and 1pm to 3.30pm, as well. Grimsby Town Hall is a cashless site, however, meaning customers’ everyday banking transactions will need to be completed at the local Post Office. The nearest is located at 67-71 Victoria Street, three minutes walk away.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “Barclays is committed to deploying a range of more flexible ways that customers can physically interact with the bank, this includes over 330 banking sites located in town centres, with a presence in spaces such as community centres, libraries and business hubs where it offers drop in and pre-booked appointments.
“We’re delighted to launch the replace banking service here in Grimsby. This represents our commitment to customers and the local community who wish to continue to have an in-person banking presence by offering the ability to visit Barclays on their local high street, albeit in a different environment.”
