A Scunthorpe town centre bar’s premises licence is under review after reported “large scale disorder” at the bar, which resulted in at least five people being charged.
The Mary Rose, in Frodingham Road, has already had its licence suspended as an interim step. On Tuesday, October 8, North Lincolnshire Council‘s Licensing (Activities) Sub-committee will decide whether to strip the bar of its licence altogether.
Humberside Police applied for the licence review after “serious disorder” on a weekend night last month. At least five people have been charged in connection with the incident, which is also described in the review application as a “violent act”.
A Humberside Police spokesperson said: “A review of a licensed premises in Scunthorpe commenced after we were called to reports of disorder between a group of people at the Mary Rose between 11.50pm on Saturday 7 September and 12.10am on Sunday 8 September.”
The police have sought a licence review on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder, and public safety. The application document and evidence statement from a Superintendent are mostly redacted – Humberside Police asked for papers associated with the application to not be published so as to not prejudice “any pending court case and ongoing investigations”.
The application, made on September 10, does state: “Overall, as this is being written, there are currently 18 suspects, eight have been arrested, five people had been charged and investigations are ongoing to find the other perpetrators of this violent act.” It is understood that at least one man was charged with violent disorder.
This criminal offence is where three or more persons “used or threatened unlawful violence” and the conduct “would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his or her personal safety”.
