A young man who went to hospital with a sore arm was left with the devastating news he had cancer.
Jake Holloway, 30, from Scunthorpe, had been putting up with the pain for weeks hoping it would just go away. But he is now having to regularly travel to Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, just outside Hull, following a shock diagnosis of lymphoma.
He told Scunthorpe Live: “I had a pain in my shoulder for three and a half weeks. I didn’t go to hospital straight away but when it got to the point it was excruciating I had to go in.

“When I was there I ended up having two normal scans and a CT scan. It literally just came out of the blue – I went to the hospital on the Friday morning thinking I just had a problem with my arm.”
Jake and his fiancée are now worried Jake’s treatment will affect their chances of having another baby and say he is at “extremely high risk of infertility”. They have a nine-year-old son and dream of him having a sibling to play with.
Because they already have a child, they say the NHS will not provide funding for IVF and so they are trying to raise money for private fertility treatment. Jake also has the financial pressure of the cost of living crisis while having to take time off work for the foreseeable future.
They said Jake has a cancerous growth on his chest measuring 16cm x 12cm and will require a minimum of 6-9 months’ worth of treatment. Surgery is not an option and Jake will be relying on chemotherapy and steroids to shrink the tumour, they said.
A GoFundMe fundraiser page has been created in case anyone is in a position to help out financially. The family say the donations will help out with:
- Costs involved with IVF treatment.
- Support with fuel costs
- Help towards easing existing debts.
- Support towards regular food supplies and maintaining hygiene/cleaning supplies (Jake is significantly prone to infections due to healthy white blood cells being destroyed)
- Extra clothing due to weight loss
- Help towards making family memories between treatment
They added: “We understand the rise in financial difficulties for a lot of families now, and we understand fully the impact of how a donation could burden your finances. If this isn’t something you feel comfortable with, we ask instead if you could please share the page wherever possible, or maybe know of somebody else who is able to donate or able to help in any way and would kindly consider forwarding our information to them.”
Jake’s family has also asked if Scunthorpe businesses who know Jake could get in touch and collect a free fundraising bucket to display in their premises. “Jake has been thrown into a fast-moving, devastating and completely unexpected journey that is filled with uncertainty and challenges,” they said.
