The Liberal Democrat leader has spoken to Radio News Hub whilst on the campaign trail in Harrogate.
He told David Prever he was the first Post Office Minister to meet with former postmaster Sir Alan Bates.
He said: “I took his concerns to the Post Office and they gave me catagorical assurances that the Horizon system was working.
“My mistake then was to believe them, and like many courts, and lawyers, and judges, and other ministers, we were lied to on an appalling scale.
“I hope the Inquiry holds people to account who were responsible for this.”
Sir Ed also told Radio News Hub his party would seek to repair the damage done to the relationship between the UK and Europe.
He didn’t go as far as saying he’d commit to rejoining the Single Market – but he said it would be a long term aim.
