Staff left ‘devastated’ as Lindsey Lodge Hospice shop broken into

A renowned Scunthorpe charity has lost an estimated £9,000 in much-needed funds after one of its shops was broken into.

Last Monday, the Lindsey Lodge Warehouse Shop on Wells Street was targeted by thieves who caused around £5,000 worth of damage to doors and fittings and stole goods and equipment worth an estimated £4,000.

With funds from the shop going to the Lindsey Lodge Hospice, which provides extensive care and support for adults with life limiting illnesses, staff were left “devastated” by the incident.

A spokesperson for the Lindsey Lodge Hospice said: “The Warehouse Team were devastated to find the shop, located on Wells Street in Scunthorpe, broken into. The shop had an estimated £4,000 of goods and equipment taken, suffered around £5,000 worth of damage to doors and fittings, and lost a day of trading.

“At a time of year when retail shops are a driving force behind generating much needed charitable funds, the team were understandably disappointed at the prospect of needing to use these funds to get back up and running again.”

Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “People can often mistakenly think of retail burglaries as a victimless crime, but this is simply not the case. Our retail stores are essential to generating the funds that sustain the care at our hospice, making up a third of the income required to run year on year.

“Not only that, but our staff and volunteers care deeply about the service they provide and the difference they make, and this came as a huge blow. The police have been informed and an investigation is ongoing.”
