Five railway stations in North Lincolnshire are in the 100 least used UK railway stations of the last year, including one that had a £1.3m upgrade.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has published its annual estimates of the number of passengers using each of the UK’s 2,575 train stations active in the last year. London Liverpool Street has topped the headlines as the new busiest UK station, according to ORR estimates of passenger footfall between April 2022 and March 2023.
But in northern Lincolnshire, only one station features in the top 1,000 most used and one, Kirton Lindsey, is in the five least-used UK railway stations. Just 94 people used Kirton Lindsey railway station the entire year. In October, Network Rail received planning permission to install tactile paving at the station to help those with impaired vision, a relatively new national requirement.

Brigg was not much better, with 288 passengers. It fell 50 places in the most used rankings to 2,557th. Both stations, however, have extremely limited services. Kirton only has trains on a Saturday.
Brigg was the same for three decades, but switched in June to a Monday to Friday service. However, rail users and residents were heavily critical of the change, as passengers face only a little over two hour same day turnaround to leave Brigg, or have to seek alternative transport arrangements.
The next least used train station in North Lincolnshire is Barrow Haven. Sixteen services a day pass through this station on the Barton to Cleethorpes line, eight to Barton and eight to the coastal resort. Only 478 passengers got on or off a train here in the last year, though, earning its place in the 50 least used UK train stations.
But it was shut from May to November 2022, while it underwent a Network Rail £1.3m upgrade of the platform and accompanying facilities. Thornton Abbey (1,134 users) and Althorpe (1,408) round out the five North Lincolnshire stations in the bottom 100 least used in the UK.
New Clee was the least used railway station in North East Lincolnshire, with 1,596 passengers and ranked 2,478th most used. Not surprisingly, Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe and Cleethorpes were the only stations to register more than 100,000 passengers in the year.
Cleethorpes had the greatest year-on-year fall of passengers, down by more than 33,500. Barton-upon-Humber had the greatest year-on-year growth in usage, up by nearly 4,000 passengers.
