Halloween is on the horizon and the pumpkin fields for picking your own spooky specimen are open.

It’s time for all the family to step into wellies and get out into the fresh air for some perfect pumpkin foraging. October is a busy month for farms dedicated to pumpkin growing and although the conditions this year have been testing for producers, there are plenty of pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and hues just ripe for the picking now.

A day out pumpkin picking is a hugely popular excursion for families across the northern Lincolnshire area. While you can buy pumpkins from the supermarket or greengrocers, there is more excitement to be had getting out into the pumpkin field and spotting just the squash or squashes you want for your Halloween festivities.

Lots of pumpkin growers offer other pumpkin-related activities into the mix too, to add to the fun of the search. Then it’s time to get carving and decorating your perfect pumpkin.

Here is a selection of the best places to go pumpkin picking across the northern Lincolnshire region. Please note some locations may charge entry fees or need pre-booking, so please check before arriving.

Pumpkin Bumpkins PYO

With 12 different varieties grown across ten acres, you’ll be sure to find your perfect pumpkin growing here, ready for you to pick fresh from the patch. The perfect autumnal adventure for the whole family, there are thousands of examples to choose from – Goosebump Pump, Polar Bear and Pink Porcelain anyone?

The pumpkin patch is free to enter – pay for what you pick – and coffee, crepes and wood fired pizzas will be available to buy on the day. Pumpkin Bumpkins is open over the weekend of October 12 and 13, and from Saturday, October 19 to Monday, October 28, and again on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, 10am to 4pm

Nunny’s Farm

Pick your own pumpkin, perfect for a spot of spooky carving, from Nunny’s Farm, Grimsby. Open to the public from Saturday, October 12, from 10am, there are pumpkins available to pick from the farm-grown specimens and priced according to size.

Nunny’s Farm will welcome pumpkin pickers daily right up until Thursday, October 31, when everyone’s Halloween activities get into full swing.

Peaks Top Farm

The pumpkins are lined up in the fields and ripe for the picking at Peaks Top Farm, New Waltham. The farm will be open daily for PYO visitors, until the pumpkins have sold out, from Saturday, October 19, from 10am and last entry will be 3.30pm.

With visitors urged to wear suitable clothing and wellies or outdoor boots for combing the fields for pumpkins are in the field, Peaks Top Farm also recommends bringing something to protect the inside of your vehicle from any residual mud that may still be on your pumpkin prize find.

Pink Pig Farm

Pink Pig’s Pumpkin Festival is running on the weekend of October 12 and 13 and then from Saturday, October 19 right through until Thursday, October 31. Festival entry includes all indoor and outdoor play so there is even more to do after loading up your wheelbarrow with a pumpkin and carving your spooky lantern in the barn.

There is a free pumpkin for every paying child, while Windle the witch will be on hand to teach you how to make potions and there will be spooky food and cakes. The pumpkin patch runs from 11am to 3pm.

Lings Farm

Come and pick your own pumpkins against the lovely backdrop of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Lings Farm, near Caistor, is offering PYO pumpkins PYO pumpkins over the weekend of October 12 and 13, and then from Saturday, October 19 until Thursday, October 31, 10am to 4pm.

There is free entry with no pre-booking needed. Lots of varieties of pumpkin, all grown on the farm, are available, with wheelbarrows to borrow and pumpkin washing facilities so you don’t grubby-up your car – and there could be a free little gourd for the best fancy dress spotted while out on the spooky stroll.

Hall Farm Park

Plenty of pre-Halloween fun is to be had down on the farm, with the pumpkin patch open from Saturday, October 12, until Thursday, October 31 (park closed Wednesdays 16th and 30th). During your visit in half-term, be sure to look out for the black cats hiding around the park to win a small prize.

Hall Farm Park will also be offering its usual activities, including indoor and outdoor play, woodland walk, goat walking, tractor rides (for an extra charge) and more.

Uncle Henry’s

Pick your own pumpkins and carve on site if you wish, leaving with the perfect pumpkin lantern all ready for your celebration. Borrow a wheelbarrow and browse the classic orange and spooky white pumpkin ranges – pay for what you pick, depending on size – and take advantage of the range of photo opportunities in the patch and garden, as well as a chance to enjoy the farm’s Jumping Pillow!

The pumpkin patch will be open from 10am to 4pm over the weekend of October 12 and 13 and then from Saturday, October 19 until Thursday, October 31. If you want a full Halloween experience, you can pick your pumpkin and enjoy all the spooky offerings that Behind the Garden Wall has to offer, including three maize mazes.

Rand Park Farm

Meet the cuddly animals, explore the toddler-friendly play areas, and enjoy a stroll through the pumpkin patch with loads of adorable photo ops – plus, every paying child receives a free pumpkin. During the Pumpkin Festival 2024 you can expect games in the pumpkin patch and storytime suited to the season.

As well as the fun in the pumpkin patch, you can enjoy all of the farm park and play. There are opportunities to take a tractor and trailer ride, and witness the fascinating process of milking, among the many indoor and outdoor adventure experiences.

Thornton Abbey Farm

Pick any pumpkin you can find, from small to large, blue, orange, green, pink or white. There are over 30 different varieties of pumpkins, squashes and gourds to choose from, all grown at Thornton Abbey Farm.

You can also carve your pumpkin at the farm – just buy a carving kit and get creating. This year there is also a play area open (separate charge payable for this and Thornton Abbey Maze) and pumpkin picking nights with some spooky actors wandering around, a licenced bar, food options, campfires, pumpkin carving competition and children’s fancy dress are also planned with dates to be confirmed.

Unai Emery targets Champions League place after Aston Villa win at Fulham

Unai Emery has targeted qualification for next season’s Champions League after their 3-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Villa responded to Raul Jimenez’s opener with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and and Issa Diop’s own goal on a day where referee Darren England handed out two red cards to Joachim Andersen and Jaden Philogene. Spanish boss Emery, whose side qualified for this year’s Champions League, wants to replicate last season’s success. “I’m very happy for the supporters that travelled here with us,” he said. “Now we’re going to prepare for the Champions League and we’re enjoying the Champions League because last year we performed perfectly in the Premier League being very consistent. “We were very focused in our demands to get Europe and achieving Champions League and we are enjoying it, but today the Premier League was most important for us. “The supporters are aware of how important the Premier League is for us to play again in Europe next year, hopefully in the Champions League.” Villa bounced back from successive draws in the league against Ipswich and Manchester United. Emery praised his side on refocusing their attention to Fulham. “Today I focused with the players on those three points,” he added. “Respecting the opponent and doing our game plan as strong as possible to get the performance we wanted and the win.” Fulham manager Marco Silva admitted his side’s performance was not good enough after they were handed successive defeats following their loss to Manchester City last time out. UK banks to shed light on consumer confidence as cheaper mortgages hit market

Some of the UK’s biggest banks are set to shed light on whether borrowers are benefiting from lower interest rates, as the lenders continue to shake off ongoing economic uncertainty. Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays and NatWest will unveil their third-quarter financial results on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively. Experts say the banking sector has been sturdy over recent months with borrowing costs starting to come down from their peak. “With the Bank of England delivering its first rate cut in July, investors will be keen to see how much of that has been passed on and whether it’s triggered any shifting behaviours from savers,” said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst for Hargreaves Lansdown. Lloyds, which also owns Halifax, has seen its income reduce since reporting bumper profits last year, and with competition across the market to offer better mortgage and savings deals heating up. In July, it said its net interest income – meaning the amount it generates from loans minus what it pays out on savings – fell by a 10th year on year. On Wednesday, the lender is expected to report a pre-tax profit of £1.6 billion for the latest quarter, July to September, which would mark a decline from the £1.9 billion earned a year ago. Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: “Thanks to the combination of competition, interest rate cuts from the Bank of England and political and public pressure, net interest margins and net interest income look to have peaked, and that is a key reason why analysts think the banks may struggle to grow earnings substantially from here onwards.” Barclays, on the other hand, is forecast to report a slight improvement in its year-on-year earnings. Analysts are pencilling in a pre-tax profit of about £2 billion, up from £1.9 million a year ago. The same goes for NatWest Group, which is forecast to report an operating pre-tax profit £1.5 billion, higher than the £1.3 billion generated last year. Gary Greenwood, a research analyst for Shore Capital Markets, said he is expecting the banks to report a “resilient” performance despite a backdrop of falling interest rates, geopolitical tensions putting pressure on oil prices, and uncertainty ahead of the UK Budget statement. Lending activity has been showing “tentative signs of improvement”, particularly the number of mortgage approvals for house purchases, due to borrowing costs coming down from their peak. “However, Budget uncertainty has cast something of a shadow over the UK economy and this may have led some borrowers to pause for breath,” he said. “That said, we would expect activity to pick up again, once Budget uncertainty has been lifted.” Chancellor Rachel Reeves will deliver her first Budget on October 30, with the Government promising not to raise the major taxes on “working people”.
