Unique exhibition of ‘unnerving’ photographs opens on Grimsby Docks

A special exhibition featuring a selection of creepy photographs that bring about a sense of unease has launched in Grimsby.

Situated at the Turntable Gallery on Wharncliffe Road, Grimsby Docks, the ‘unloud’ photography exhibition launched on Saturday, February 15 and will run until Saturday, March 15.

The unique exhibition brings together three displays of works taken by internationally recognised photographers, including Ashley Gallant, who has had his work exhibited in as far afield as Tokyo, and Charles Fox, who splits his time between the UK and South East Asia.

Speaking to Grimsby Live, co-owner of the Turntable Gallery, Dale Wells, said: “Ashley has put this whole show together as a response of the space which he sees as a bit of a hinterland. There’s three elements to the show – Ashley’s work in our first chamber, Charles’ work in our third chamber and then there’s a group show in our second chamber.

“There’s a weirdness to it, and that’s what Ashley is trying to get across in the photographs he’s chosen – they’re all slightly unnerving. The pristine photographs against these really gritty, steel chambers just works.”

Having first opened on Victoria Street in early 2022, the gallery opened a second premises on Grimsby Docks in September 2023, with the original gallery in the town centre closing last year.

When asked what the Turntable Gallery has in the pipeline this year, Dale said: “We’re in a position to commission work at the moment and we have a show with a very well-known artist in the Brit Art movement, Tim Noble, coming up. We’ve had work that he’s making work specifically for Grimsby, which is brilliant news.

“We also have a research-based show by Darren Neave [co-owner], which will be fun. We’re solely on Grimsby Docks for now, but we do get a lot of people coming up to the Docks to see the shows, which is lovely. We’re hoping to develop the Turntable brand into something that’s nurturing with workshops for people to come to.”

The Turntable Gallery is open from 11am to 4pm, Thursday to Saturday, or by appointment. You can find out more about the current ‘unloud’ exhibition by clicking here.
