Vida Healthcare launches training centre in moves to attract new talent

Specialist dementia care company Vida Healthcare has opened a new training centre in Harrogate amid moves to attract new workers into the industry.

The 2,500sqft Vida Healthcare Academy has been launched to support the career progression of people working in social care, following expansion within its training department to seven members of staff. The department invests in staff by promoting lifelong learning, to provide opportunities for career progression and establish staff as dementia ambassadors.

Since 2019, Vida Healthcare has grown from 250 to 600 staff members, all of whom have carried out training and development programmes with Vida Academy since its inception. The academy offers courses including induction programmes for new starters, to specialist training courses and apprenticeships from Level 2 to Level 6. The training department also hosts a dedicated app which was developed in-house to provide regular updates on news, training courses and opportunities.

The new building, based in Starbeck, will also support the care home operator in attracting new talent at a time when recruitment has been dwindling, with the number of filled posts within the adult social care sector decreasing by around 3% between 2021 and 2022 – the only annual drop since records began in 2012.

James Rycroft, managing director at Vida Healthcare, said: “We’re always on the lookout for new ways that we can invest in our staff, and people interested in a career in social care, and provide them with career development opportunities. Our team is our greatest asset and the new centre will ensure we can provide significant professional growth and development opportunities throughout their time with us. This will also ensure we can continue to provide residents with the highest quality of compassionate care.”

Vida Academy was first launched in 2021 to create a sustainable, specialist dementia care workforce that offers distinct career paths for staff. A range of programmes and initiatives are available to staff, including a mentorship programme to support new starters, house managers development programme, student placements, and a reinvigorated Care Certificate offer.

The Vida Healthcare Academy is based on the High Street in Starbeck, Harrogate, and the next recruitment open day is taking place on Thursday, October 5.

An alert member of the public tipped off a patrolling police officer to a dealer selling drugs outside a chip shop, a court heard. When police officers attended Harry’s fish and chip shop, in Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, they found Connor Milton pushing an item down the waistband of his trousers. At Grimsby Crown Court, Milton, 19, of no fixed address, admitted being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine on April 18 this year. Prosecuting, Natalie Dean told the court Milton had been sentenced to 24 months in prison for possession of a machete in May last year and a further offence of being involved in the supply of cocaine in June last year. The prison sentence was suspended by Judge Mark Bury in November last year. She said PC Watson was on patrol in Frodingham Road when a member of the public brought it to the attention of the officer that a man was selling drugs outside a fish and chip shop. Milton was known to the officer. When police attended they saw Milton eating a pie inside the shop. He dropped it and immediately put a black cylinder item down the waistband of his trousers. Miss Dean said the defendant was searched and found with between 25 to 30 foil wraps and £88.50 in cash. It was later identified as crack cocaine. For Milton, Ian Haywood said his client was vulnerable and had been exploited. He also highlighted his client’s immaturity. He said Milton had been homeless since 2018 after leaving the family home. “I have not read a more tragic outline of a young man before. You tend to find people gravitate to those who would exploit young people.” Judge Richard Woolfall said a lot of people were doing their best to help the defendant but he was not taking up that support. But he warned him: “You could end up serving a life sentence in prison in instalments.” He said people who are exploited to deal in drugs have a choice to tell police. “Class A drugs destroy people’s lives. They have a devastating impact on communities with people who are addicted and those committing crime to fund their addiction,” told the judge. He activated the two-year suspended sentence in a Young Offender Institution and added a further 12 months for the drugs offence. The judge ordered the money seized in the arrest to be given to Humberside Police to buy equipment. “They can buy battering rams in their fight against crime,” said Judge Woolfall. Rafael Nadal sweeps into Swedish Open third round after win over Cameron Norrie

Rafael Nadal recovered from 4-1 down in the second set to claim victory over British number two Cameron Norrie in the second round of the Swedish Open at Bastad. The 38-year-old, who opted to miss Wimbledon in order focus efforts on the Paris Olympics, had his serve broken by number-five seed Norrie who was looking to level the match after going down 6-4 in the first set. But having received treatment on court to his arm after talking a heavy fall, Nadal came back to claim a 6-4 win in the set and progress to the quarter-final where he will face Argentinian Mariono Navone. “Great feelings, it’s been a while without playing on the Tour since Roland Garros and I had a chance to compete against a great player like Cameron,” said Nadal. “It’s part of the journey today. I haven’t been competing very often so matches like today help and holding the pressure on the opponent for the whole game is something I need to improve on because I haven’t played enough.” Nadal, who will play singles and doubles with Carlos Alcaraz in Paris, broke Norrie once in the first set to set up what at the stage looked like being a routine win, but having fallen behind in the second required a five-game winning run in order to edge through.
