We try the breakfast menu at Marples in Cleethorpes

Sea View Street has always been one my favourite places in Cleethorpes.

There have been some lovely independent shops and restaurants down there over the years and one that has really stood the test of time is Marples Cafe.

I’m pretty sure it was there when I was a child, so it has definitely been around for a while! It’s also a rare gem that’s open on a Monday so on a rare day off together, we decided to venture down there for brunch after the school run and a walk along the seafront.

We hadn’t booked, but probably should have done. Is was very busy when we arrived although we did get a table straight away. It then emptied out a bit but was busy again by the time we left, with people being turned away. So definitely book if you can – it’s very popular – especially, I imagine, on Mondays, when most other places are closed.

Avocado Smash at Marples

Marples is open from 8.30am Monday to Sunday and serves its breakfast menu all day. Options include Full English, vegetarian breakfast, eggs Benedict, french toast, pancakes, breakfast ciabattas, omelettes, the list goes on.

After taking far too long to decide, I opted for the Avocado Crush (£9.50), which was, unsurprisingly, crushed avocado with two poached eggs, tomatoes and pesto on toast. I opted for sourdough.

My husband (very quickly) chose the eggs Benedict (£8.50) and for reasons I can’t quite explain, we also ordered the Brioche French Toast between us, which was £6.50.

They asked if we wanted it all at the same time, and in hindsight, we should have asked them to hold the French Toast, but as they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The cosy decor in Marples

Anyway, it didn’t take long to arrive and it looked incredible.

The sourdough was the perfect match for the perfectly ripe avocado and perfectly poached eggs. The pesto was a lovely addition and it was just the right amount so as not to make the whole thing too rich. So top marks for that dish. The Eggs Benedict also went down very well – again, the eggs were cooked perfectly.

We did have to wait a few minutes until we felt able to dig into the French Toast, hence wishing we had asked for that to arrive a bit later, but never mind.

The French Toast at Marples

It was served with berry compote, creme fraiche, almonds and maple syrup. It was very nice – but just too much for us in the end.

The service was spot on, attentive but not too much so, and very friendly.

For the three dishes, a cappuccino and a smoothie, the bill came to £34.50, which was very reasonable for the quality of the food and service.

We will definitely be back.
