It is a day for dressing in comfy clobber, eating up the leftovers and slumping in front of the telly to catch a seasonal film or two. That is if you are not heading out to see your favourite football team in action.
For plenty of eager shoppers, however, it’s time for a spending spree. With the run-up to Christmas Day and all that gift-buying already forgotten, Boxing Day offers a whole new level of retail therapy, with feel-good offers aplenty.

Boxing Day and its highly-anticipated sales rank highly on many consumers’ seasonal agendas. Hunting down a bargain buy immediately after Christmas Day is a tradition that many are keen to uphold.
Regardless of the hour, savvy shoppers will forego precious sleep to be at the front of the sale queues on Boxing Day. With so many prices slashed at this time of year, it’s a chance to get a head start on next Christmas too. Here are local store opening times for the Boxing Day sales.
Boots
Gift sets, make-up and more tends to be marked down straight after Christmas at Boots. Think about squirreling away some discount-priced items for birthdays and Christmas next year – you can shop on Boxing Day from 10.30am to 4.30pm, at Freshney Place.
Currys
The Currys sale is billed as a chance to snap up some high-end tech at a fraction of the normal selling price. Its store at High Point Retail Park will be open from 9am to 5pm.
Dunelm
There is already a “big winter sale” running at the homewares and soft furnishings store. For more post-Christmas deals, the store will be opening 10am to 5pm, at Victoria Street North, Grimsby.
Matalan
Matalan’s Christmas sale has been running for a while now, online and in store. Expect Christmas decorations, clothing and homewares to be the ones with “reduced” labels attached if you are heading for the Boxing Day sale – the store at Corporation Road is expected to be open from 9am to 6pm.
Primark
You can often find a sale or clearance area at other times of the year but any extra after-Christmas savings can be had from 10.30am to 4pm, at Freshney Place.
Next
Next bosses have again decided to keep stores closed on Boxing Day with the chain beginning its “End of Season Sale” at 6am on Wednesday, December 27, at its store at Victoria Retail Park, where you can shop until 8pm.
Freshney Place
The shopping centre will be open on Boxing Day, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. The same trading times apply for New Year’s Eve, Sunday, December 31.
