Woman pleads for action on ‘dangerous’ Scunthorpe road after crashes outside her home

A fed-up woman who has witnessed multiple collisions outside her house fears it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

Hazel moved to Brumby Wood Lane, off Kingsway, Scunthorpe, with her family ten years ago. During that time, she has witnessed three road traffic accidents right outside her home. The most recent was in the early hours of Monday morning, when a driver collided with a parked car.

She believes that the main factors behind the accidents are an unexpected bend in the road and the speed at which drivers are travelling after turning off the 40mph Kingsway. Now, Hazel is calling for traffic-calming measures to be installed along Brumby Wood Lane.

Hazel said: “We’ve lived there for nearly ten years and this is the third time it’s happened near our house. The driver [on Monday] hit my neighbour’s parked car, which has now been written off. Drivers turn left on to the road from Kingsway and forget there’s a 30mph speed limit and there’s a slight bend in the road. It’s almost like they start to lose control.

“Before we bought the house, a car had driven right into it, and down the bottom, you can’t turn right anymore because someone died in an accident on that bend, and that’s reduced the amount of people driving on the road. But it took someone to die for that to be implemented. There’s no speed limit signs or speedometers along the road. We used to have one but it’s gone now.”

In 2021, residents backed a petition to prevent people turning right from Brumby Wood Lane into Kingsway following the tragic death of a motorcyclist. While she welcomed those changes, Hazel said that the accidents outside her home had left her fearing for the safety of her child and other people.

“I’m worried because my daughter will be going to secondary school soon and the way people drive along the road, I get worried about her walking on the street. It’s not just at night that people drive dangerously, it’s in the middle of the day,” she said.

“Even if the speed limit is down to 20mph it would make us feel better. It’s quite a popular walking route to get into town and all it takes is some idiot to drive ridiculously – it’s another accident waiting to happen and I fear it’s only a matter of time until the next fatality.”

North Lincolnshire Council has been contacted for comment.
