Yorkshire and Humber firms make list of best places to work in UK

A total of 27 businesses from across Yorkshire and the Humber are celebrating after being named among the Best Places to Work in the UK for 2024 by The Sunday Times.

More than 500 businesses across the UK have been highlighted in the list, which shines a light on the best organisations to work for by measuring staff feedback on factors including reward and recognition, information sharing, empowerment, wellbeing, pride and job satisfaction.

The list – which includes breakdowns for companies from Very Big organisations to Big, Medium and Small organisations – also singles out top 10 companies, which achieved the highest engagement scores.

  • Within the Big organisations category law firm Clarion and IT consultancy Xalient, both in Leeds, made the top 10. Clarion was highlighted for nurturing talent through trainee and apprenticeship programmes and coaching and mentorship initiatives. Social events include pantomime trips, BBQs and Christmas parties for the 310 employees, as well as on-site massages, yoga classes and free flu jabs.

    Cybersecurity tech firm Xalient, meanwhile, has a focus on culture and inclusion its the 330 employees – three in 10 of whom are female, with the same proportion non-white. Other firms to make the Big list include chemicals company Croda, based in Snaith, East Yorkshire; Leeds credit management firm Lowell; York-based Onebright; Wakefield legal firm Switalskis; the William Jackson Food Group in Hessle and Sewell Group, in Hull.

    Sewell Group has two arms, with fuel station and convenience store operator Sewell on the go, and a range of estates businesses working across investments, construction, facilities management, consultancy and data mapping. The company has made the list consistently over the past 15 years.

    Within the Medium category Eden Training Solutions in Normanton, West Yorkshire, made the top 10. It offers a “golden ticket award” nominated by colleagues and a scheme for “golden ideas”.

    Other firms to feature in the category included First Event, Border to Coast Pensions Partnerhsip, Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors, Reward Finance Group and Futures, all in Leeds, MSL Propety Care Services in Halifax, Bradford 2025, and Hull based Connexin.

    The Small organisations category features a bumper list of firms including top 10 company tmc3, a Leeds cyber security consultancy, Castle Employment Group in Scarborough, Circus PPC Agency in Leeds, Consult Search and Selection in Leeds, Coterie in Huddersfield, Dene Healthcare in Leeds, James Legal in Hull, Language is Everything in Hull, Perform Partners in Leeds and Ultimate Commercial Interiors in West Yorkshire.
