Disgusted residents say Scunthorpe flytipping is out of control and 10-foot stinks of dirty nappies

A Scunthorpe road has turned into a “rubbish tip” according to residents who say constant flytipping has made their lives a misery for the last five years.

Debbie Istan says the 10-foot that runs through Buckingham Street has been full of rubbish for “four or five years”. The teacher, who has lived in this part of Scunthorpe for more than 50 years, told BBC Look North: “It’s an area I used to be proud of, but not anymore.”

Pointing to a mound of bursting rubbish sacks, mattresses, clothing, and building materials, she added: “Here is always full and there’s always something there, dirty nappies, and you can actually smell it now.

Her concerns are echoed by resident Paul Day who tries to clean up the smaller piles of debris as often as possible. “This is a constant job here,” he said. “The Council don’t care, we ring up and report it, give addresses where it’s come from.”

Indicating one large pile of waste, he added: “We’ve had this rubbish in the 10-foot now for a month. The only reason I clean it is because I’ve got a car and I don’t want to get a puncture.

“You ring the Council day after day, give addresses, and it gives you the impression they are not interested in this area whatsoever.” Another nearby resident, Mick Fawcett, said the flytipping was regularly removed for a short period when the issue was reported on BBC Look North last year.

But now he believes rubbish has been in the street for around six weeks without being collected. He and Debbie believe the Council needs to focus on enforcement and prosecute the flytippers responsible.

Debbie said: “We know what we are supposed to do with rubbish, but some people are choosing not to do that. I think it’s because they are getting away with it.

“Put cameras up, man them. Make an example of these people and make a public example of these people. If they haven’t got money to pay a fine, get them cleaning the streets.”

Councillor Rob Waltham, the Conservative leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We’ve issued 355 Fixed Penalty Notices, we’ve got 68 Environmental Act notices, that’s individuals in properties that are in breach of this.

“We are about to regulate landlords in this area because we need to go to the next step but still we have this perpetual problem, unfortunately, in this area.”
