After starting this series of Married At First Sight on a high, Grimsby’s Brad Skelly has quickly fallen out of public favour.
The local model attracted widespread criticism after Tuesday night’s episode of the E4 dating show, where he told his partner Shona to ‘shut up’ at a dinner party. Viewers took to social media to say the moment was cringeworthy and not acceptable, and Brad himself posted an Instagram story to say the edit was ‘difficult to watch’.
However, opinions online quickly turned into trolling, with some choosing to write nasty and very personal comments on Brad’s Instagram page. Dating coach Paul Carrick Brunson hit back at trolls by posting a video stating it was ‘cool to have an opinion’ but the minute hurtful words are directly posted to contestants’ pages, it becomes attention-seeking and indicates the troll has a miserable life.
An argument erupted between Shona, Brad and other contestants, when the other couples became sceptical of their relationship. Many believed the couple’s sexual chemistry was far greater than their emotional one, due to Brad’s comments about Shona’s immaturity.
When fan favourites Luke and Jay were asked to rank all of the couples based on how genuine they are at a dinner party, Shona became upset when she and Brad ranked low. However, Brad became frustrated with Shona’s need for outside approval and snapped at her.
“You want people. Why is it always an external validation with you?” argued Brad in tense scenes. “I don’t care if people don’t see our love. I don’t have an emotional attachment to somebody else. You need to let it go.”
The moment that really shocked viewers was when Shona tried to interject and Brad snapped at her to ‘shut up’. Social media users branded Brad ‘controlling’ in response and some were calling to remove him from the show.
One social media user said: “Brad needs to take his shut ups and controlling attitude back to the 1950s.” Another added: “I really think they need to remove brad from MAFSUK immediately.”
However, other commenters took to Brad’s profile to discuss his family relationships and accuse him of abuse. Brad’s family and friends posted to remind others that the show is edited to be entertaining and what you see isn’t necessarily a true reflection of Brad’s character in real life.
Dating coach Paul Carrick Brunson took to Instagram to share his thoughts of trolling and said: “The moment you take an opinion which is negative and hurtful and you go to one of the contributor’s pages and you post it, that tells me you have low self esteem. It tells me you have a miserable life and it also tells me your breath stinks because there’s good research to show that when you have those characteristics that your breath probably stinks.
“If that’s you, I want you to take your keyboard warrior fingers and sit your a** down because we don’t want that around here. Maybe go and get a good book – and get a toothbrush.”
