Grimsby restaurant and bistro with rave reviews gears up to move to bigger Cleethorpes location

A popular restaurant which has brought a “slice of London to Grimsby” is relocating to Cleethorpes. Arriving in Abbeygate, in Grimsby town centre, back in 2022, Nasturtium began by serving an array of delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options to the public, before launching its eclectic and modern evening set menu the following year to rave reviews. The restaurant has been so successful that owner and chef Jack Phillips has now secured a larger premises, at the site of the former Captain’s Table restaurant – and subsequently The Funny Onion – on Kingsway in Cleethorpes. He plans to officially open the new Nasturtium in May. READ MORE: Speaking to Grimsby Live, Jack said: “The new site will have the same high-quality brunch and restaurant wares, but the venue itself is bigger so I can facilitate a team in the kitchen, so we have have more options in the evening. Everything will be priced individually, so if customers don’t want a three-course meal, it’s no problem. “There will be a bigger wine menu and draft craft beers along with a collaboration with a local brewery for a Nasturtium beer. We will still be focusing on fine dining in the evening with a Japanese and Scandinavian influence.” Chef Jack Phillips (Image: Nasturtium) Jack said he has been delighted at the success of Nasturtium since he set up shop on Abbeygate two years ago. He continued: “I’m really proud to be taking it to the next level of its evolution and making it more accessible for new customers that are not too challenged with food offerings, and giving more options with drinks and cocktails. “I get a lot of people telling me that I’ve helped to change the food scene in Grimsby, which feels amazing. We did the Japanese food one week not thinking it would sell as well as it did, but we sold out almost immediately and since then there has been more of a visible food culture change.” Nasturtium launched its evening menu in 2023 (Image: Grimsby Live) Proposed main dishes on the menu at the new Cleethorpes site include Braised Lamb Shoulder Ragu with Pappardelle and Wild Garlic, Braised Short Rib with Smoked Marrow Bone Sauce and Lemon Persillade, and Halibut with Vin Juan Sauce, Parsley Oil and Smoked Mussels. The current restaurant on Abbeygate will close on Saturday, April 27, with the new restaurant set to open in May. Like Nasturtium on Facebook here to keep up-to-date with announcements.

The classic you won’t want to miss – return of free Humber Bridge car event for 2024

The Humber Bridge Classic Car Night is back for the first time this year. The free family event takes over the car parks of the Humber Bridge estate, with hundreds of prized classic vehicles for people to view. A post on X by the Humber Bridge Board said: “This Friday, April 19, the @eytcc Classic Car Night returns to the Humber Bridge estate for the first time in 2024! “Hundreds of classic cars will descend upon our car parks to be placed on display. It is a free event open for all to come along and view.” READ MORE: The event, based around the southbound car park in Ferriby Road, Hessle, starts at 5pm and is set to finish by 9pm. It is being hosted by East Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club, a regional club for owners or enthusiasts of all types of motor vehicles that are 15 years or older. The post said: “The Main Car Park will be open as normal to all members of the public throughout the day. Please note that it will become very busy from 4pm onwards. Hundreds of classic vehicles will take over the Humber Bridge car parks (Image: Humber Bridge Board) “If you plan to attend the event as a spectator, please note that parking is extremely limited as the majority of the site is reserved for the display of the vintage vehicles. Please consider car sharing or attending on foot/bicycle if you are able, or using an alternative car park in the local area.” Those who do use the car park are urged to ensure they keep to designated (outlined) parking bays only. The Southbound, Coach, and Hub car parks will be closed from 3.30pm on Friday. Any vehicles still in the car parks during this time will still be able to leave, with stewards in place to open the exit gates. Drivers are asked to exercise caution when leaving as the car parks will be busy. “You will also still be able to access the west footpath on foot/bicycle as normal from the country park – however, please stick to the designated footpaths as there will be a lot of movement from cars as they begin to arrive and leave,” the post said. I went for lunch at the café with the best views in North East Lincolnshire and it was lovely from start to finish

Among all the eateries in the area that I’ve always been desperate to try, The Landmark Café in Ashby cum Fenby was at the very top of my list. Opened in 2022 on the Willow Lakes site, the café and restaurant is renowned for its impressive 73ft viewing platform with the idyllic backdrop of the Lincolnshire countryside. Not to mention its modern, stylish and classy décor throughout, and of course, a selection of menus that leave you spoilt for choice. So on a weekday lunchtime when I had a couple of hours to kill, I buckled my little one into the car and made the 15-minute scenic journey from Grimsby, through Waltham and into Ashby cum Fenby. READ MORE: My first impression after walking in was just how busy the café was – although I can’t say I was surprised. I asked for a table for two and was told by a friendly member of staff that there was pretty much nothing available because I hadn’t made a booking – unless I was OK sitting on a table next to the bar, which wasn’t a problem at all for me. Browsing the menu, I took a while to choose, because everything just sounded so delicious. In the end I went for The Landmark Steak Sandwich (£12.50), which was described on the menu as sliced rump steak with sticky-sweet harissa onion jam, smoky mayo and rocket served in a toasted ciabatta, served with skinny fries and homemade coleslaw. The café is lovely inside – pictured in 2022 shortly after its opening (Image: GrimsbyLive/Donna Clifford) My little girl chose the Lincolnshire Sausages (£8), which was served with skinny fries and the choice of garden peas, mushy peas or beans. Going up to the till to order, I did like that the staff member asked instantly if we had any allergies – my daughter has quite a severe allergy to egg, so it’s always reassuring to know that a café or restaurant takes care when it comes to potential allergens. All the menus were really informative about allergens and ingredients, too. Our food was served within ten to 15 minutes, which wasn’t long to wait at all considering how busy the café was. Appearance-wise, everything looked amazing – but then again, I couldn’t help but noticing that even the lunch options as basic as jacket potatoes being served at other tables were presented beautifully. I asked for my steak medium, and it was cooked to perfection, seasoned with black pepper. Combined with the tangy and sweet onion jam, the smoky mayo with a subtle kick, the peppery rocket leaves and the light ciabatta bun, it was honestly one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. All the flavours worked so well together, and it was just absolutely delicious. I ordered The Landmark Steak Sandwich (£12) (Image: Grimsby Live) The fries were the perfect side dish, too. I often struggle to finish a whole portion of chips that are more on the chunky side as I just find them so heavy on my stomach, so it was nice to be able to actually finish a portion! No complaints at all about my daughter’s dish, either – she seemed to enjoy it, and was served three sausages instead of the two stated on the menu – so a win-win all round. My verdict: This is the best place I’ve eaten lunch at for a long time – The Landmark Café and Restaurant really did not disappoint. The place itself was absolutely stunning, from the stylish furnishings and décor to the cleanliness and tidiness. It was just a really pleasant place with a buzzing atmosphere, and it goes without saying that the views are incredible. The food was delicious, too – I honestly could not fault any of it. The price isn’t necessarily cheap as chips, but it’s not expensive, either. I think for the atmosphere, views and experience as a whole, it’s worth paying that little bit extra, anyway. I would recommend booking a table in advance before just jumping in your car and driving there (like me), because it really does fill up. Us North East Lincolnshire folk are so lucky to have somewhere as lovely as this on our doorstep. I’ll definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu, and to enjoy the views on a less rainy day!

Jonathan Ross describes Peter Levy’s ‘awkward’ Glory Hole report as his ‘favourite moment of the week’

Talk-show host Jonathan Ross has described an awkward innuendo-riddled moment for Peter Levy as his “absolute favourite moment from the week”. On Saturday evening’s edition of ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show, after introducing his guests including Little Mix star Perrie Edwards, Strictly dancer Johannes Radebe, comedian and actress Aisling Bea, comedian and presenter Frank Skinner, and English rockers Kasabian, Jonathan swiftly moved on to the subject of the BBC Look North host’s hilarious exchange with weather forecaster Keeley Donovan that left him blushing and in a fit of laughter. Introducing the clip from the news show’s broadcast earlier this month, he said: “Sometimes the universe takes the perfect two stories and puts them side by side for us, and this was one of those moments.” READ MORE: The amusing exchange came when Keeley said: “I’ve also got some PR for you, aren’t you on Channel 5 on Sunday night?” When asked about the name of the show, a flustered Peter replied: “When Sex On TV Goes Horribly Wrong.” Wishing Keeley a nice weekend, he tried to move on to the next item but was mortified to find out what it was and burst out laughing at the “awkward junction” before, still grinning, saying: “The famous Glory Hole walkway in Lincoln has reopened today after being closed for over a year.” Returning to the studio, Jonathan said: “They closed the Glory Hole walkway! What a blow to the tourist industry.” After seeing the segment, Keeley posted a clip on her Instagram with the caption: “We’ve made it onto the Jonathan Ross Show!” Peter is no stranger to wandering into the realm of suggestive humour on Look North. In January, he struggled to avoid laughing after asking viewers “How big is your hole?” during a broadcast about potholes. Lincoln’s Glory Hole has also seen him cracking up before, as he struggled to keep a straight face during a report last August on the repair bill for the historic Lincoln walkway.

Why did the giraffe walk from Grimsby to Skegness? Life-size puppet making long journey – and you can meet her!

Families can come and meet a life-size giraffe puppet – and decorate her – before she walks the distance from Grimsby to Skegness in aid of a wildlife charity. Puppeteer Sebastian Mayer will be helping Zafara the giraffe make the journey in support of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT). The giraffe is 3.4m tall and weighs 9kg, although Sebastian also carries 5kg of camping gear so that he and the giraffe can camp along the way. Zarafa is made of carbon fibre with a cardboard skin, so that local people can draw and write messages on her as she goes along. Today, Sunday, April 14, children and adults are invited to come and meet Zarafa in Grimsby’s Victoria Street, from noon to 3pm, where they can paint on her hide to prepare her for the journey, beginning on Monday morning. READ MORE: Zarafa was created in 2023 by Sebastian and his girlfriend Daisy Beattie. Over ten weeks from April to June last year, Seb walked Zarafa 1,000km through France, following in the footsteps of a real giraffe who did the same journey in 1827, when she was gifted to the French king by the ruler of Egypt. Sebastian said: “I am so proud of myself and Zarafa for finishing such an epic trek. It was a delight to have her as a travelling companion, she really helped break the ice in a foreign country.” Puppeteer Sebastian Mayer has previously walked Zafara the giraffe 1,000km through France (Image: Dan Tsantilis) The creation of the puppet and the walk through Lincolnshire is supported with funding from the Arts Council England. Sebastian said: “Walking is such a great way to improve our mental and physical health, and to forge a connection with nature. “Charities like the LWT are instrumental in preserving and protecting our natural spaces for generations to come. Please chip in to make this adventure count.” Sebastian added: “I am thrilled to be back on the road with Zarafa, this time taking on the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds and the renowned beaches of East Lindsey, although the weather will be a lot more challenging that what I’m used to, especially for a cardboard giraffe.” He hopes to complete the 85km in a week, arriving in Skegness on Sunday, April 21. You can donate to Sebastian’s campaign via his JustGiving page.

‘No Added Sugar’ Vimto drink recalled as it contains added sugar

Bottles of Vimto drink are being recalled after being labelled with a “No Added Sugar” statement when the product actually contains added sugar. The recall relates to certain batches of the mixed fruit flavoured soft drink. Nichols plc is recalling the bottles, saying the product is “a potential risk to consumers who need to manage their sugar intake”. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products. READ MORE: The Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought the products and need to manage your sugar intake, please do not drink them.” Customers should return a product concerned in the recall to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. The batch codes and best before dates are located on the shoulder of the bottle in each case. A simple way to identify whether a product is affected, is to establish whether the product has a purple cap but carries the statement ‘No Added Sugar’ as depicted above. I challenged myself to eat the Mega Mixed Grill at The Grosvenor in Cleethorpes – and failed

When it comes to meals that you just know will leave you full for the rest of the day, a supersize mixed grill is definitely up there with the go-to orders. Being one of those people who can hardly ever manage to finish a full plate of food, I thought I’d challenge myself whilst out for lunch at The Grosvenor in Cleethorpes. I do love a challenge, after all. Browsing the menu at the popular pub and restaurant, I noticed the ‘Ultimate Plates’ section, which is essentially just huge plates of delicious-sounding grub, all priced at a reasonable cost. I was originally planning to order the Curry House Feast, but noticed when I logged on to the Sizzling Pubs app to order, that this was unavailable, along with a few other dishes. READ MORE: Luckily, the Mega Mixed Grill was still available. Described on the menu as a five-ounce rump steak, seven-ounce gammon steak, grilled chicken fillet, two pork sausages, grilled tomato, mushrooms, onion rings and skin-on fries, I thought it sounded delish. It had been a while since I went for a mixed grill, so I thought I’d challenge myself and see if I could actually finish one for once. (Spoiler alert: of course I didn’t). The majority of the meal was delicious (Image: Grimsby Live) Our food took around 15 or 20 minutes to arrive, and when it did, my first thought was how huge the plate of food was – but I was so hungry that I actually thought I’d be able to finish it. Most things on the plate were delicious, even more so in the river of beef dripping that I ordered to go with the steak. The chicken was tender and juicy, the gammon had that perfect salty kick, the sausages were thick and packed with flavour and the chips were light, fluffy and moreish. The only downside is that the steak was way overcooked and too chewy for my liking – I ordered a medium (pink in the middle) but it came well-done. It was a shame because that was the part of the meal I was most looking forward to. Needless to say, I didn’t end up finishing it – but I tried my best! My verdict: The Ultimate plates at The Grosvenor are a great option if you’re hungry (or eyes bigger than your belly, in my case) and don’t want to spend too much money. For what you get, the price is pretty unbeatable. The Mega Mixed Grill set me back just £13.49, which is typically the price of a standard plate of steak and chips in many restaurants. The pub itself was clean, tidy and pleasant, and staff were friendly. The only downsides were that lots of items on the menu were sold out and my steak was overcooked. But I’ll definitely be back to try one of the other Ultimate plates on offer. At those prices and for this much food, you really cannot go wrong.

Pics as families meet newborn lambs at Elsham Hall and Thornton Abbey Maze

Families had a chance to see lambs being born at one of the biggest lambing events in the country. Elsham Hall has more than 300 ewes, but the barn is only open to the public for two days. The first was on Easter Sunday, the second will be on Sunday April 7. (Tickets can be purchased on the Elsham Hall website.) Meanwhile, Thornton Abbey Maze, near Ulceby, has launched its Easter Lambing Live event, which runs every day until April 15. The events includes a chance to feed the lambs and a tractor ride with Easter egg hunt. (See details on the Thornton Abbey Maze website.) Our photographer Donna Clifford went along to both events yesterday. Take a look at her pictures below! READ MORE: 65 pictures from an Easter weekend Big Night Out in Cleethorpes five years ago

Grimsby boy A T Wright to release first novel – The Northern Travels – at age of just 14

A Grimsby teenager whose imagination is so active that he decided his dream job was to be an author has taken the leap and written his first three novels – at the age of just 14. Aidan Wright spent seven months writing The Northern Travels, the first of a four-part fantasy adventure series titled The Legends of Ace Ford, when he was just 13. One year on, he has already finished writing the second book in the series (The Grey Mountains), and isn’t long off finishing the third (The Goblin’s Sea). Next month, Aidan’s first novel will be available to buy from all major booksellers under his pen name A.T. Wright – and mum Colleen couldn’t be prouder of her son. READ MORE: Speaking to Grimsby Live, Colleen said: “He’s always had an active imagination and at the age of 13 when we were discussing what options he might want to take and what he wanted to do as a job when he grew up, he said an author. “I said, ‘why are you waiting until you grow up, as your imagination will probably not be as good when you’re older, do it now’, so he did. It took him about seven months to complete. The cover of Aidan’s first book in The Legends of Ace Fords series, ‘The Northern Travels’ “Wednesday and Sunday are no tech days in our house so he probably wrote five days a week for a few hours each day, but believe me if he could write every day, he would.” Aidan’s books, which are suitable for all ages, follow the adventures of Ace Ford and his four companions, Libbie, Jim, Becky and Austin, who are all orphans in a San Diego orphanage. The five of them head to the beach on a typical summer’s day – only to have their entire lives flipped upside down. They wake up in a peculiar kingdom, only to discover that it is controlled by a mysterious, wicked empire, ruled by an evil god. Pursued by assassins and a terrifying snake woman, the five characters travel through terrain and weather unimaginable, meeting an array of strange creatures along the way. Colleen continued: “The plot and sub-plots are all tucked away in his mind and he knows exactly what’s happening and when. I would read his chapters once a week to point out any glaring mistakes but they’d perhaps be about two or three grammatical errors that needed addressing. As the first person to have read the book, and yes I know I’m his mum so I’m going to say this, but it’s made me laugh out loud, and it’s also made me cry. “I’m so proud of him, but most of all I’m over the moon for him to have achieved it at such a young age. I don’t think he realises the potential magnitude for him which makes it so much more special.” Aidan’s first book will be released on Friday, April 26. You can pre-order from Amazon or from Waterstones .
